Ranch Property Brief

Mesa de las Viejas offers an incredible opportunity to own a rare forest inholding. These types of properties are hard to find and rarely come on the market. Surrounded by Carson National forest sitting above the Rio Chama bordering the Chama River Canyon Wilderness the ranch offers seclusion and excellent hunting. If the fall, sit on the deck and enjoy expansive views of the Rio Chama Canyon and Huckbay Canyon while listening to the sound of elk bugles echoing across the landscape while eagles soar overhead. The remoteness of the ranch offers a tranquil setting to get away from it all. The ranch comes with equipment and is set up and ready for a new owner. So bring your horses and/or ATVs and enjoy.

The ranch is a national forest inholding located to the west of Highway 84 in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico with the nearest community being Cebolla and about an hour away from Chama, New Mexico; home of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railway.

Elevation, Topography, Vegetation

Sitting between 7,500 feet and 8,000 feet in elevation the ranch offers the perfect median between lower and higher elevation ranches. Ponderosa pines, pinyon pines, and junipers cover the rolling hillsides offering protection for wildlife on the west and east sides of the ranch with a nice open meadow running through the middle of the ranch in a north-south orientation. Several smaller meadows dot the ranch as well.

The ranch house is a newer construction 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom modern home with metal roof and siding with lower porch and upper deck. There is also an insulated metal generator shed as well as two 20-foot cargo containers used for workshop and storage. Some equipment will also be conveyed including a backhoe, Polaris Ranger and Ford F250.

The ranch sits in unit 51B which is a primary elk management zone with high elk numbers and good potential for trophy bulls. Currently, the ranch receives 4 elk vouchers. For 2022, the ranch received 1 Bow ES, 2 Bull Rifle, and 2 Cow Rifle vouchers. Mule deer vouchers for the unit are unlimited. There is also excellent bear, lion, and varmint hunting.

There is no shortage of recreation opportunities in the area. Enjoy offroading on miles of forest service roads in the area or a nice hike down to the Rio Chama. Be sure to take your fishing pole and a picnic lunch and enjoy dipping your feet into its cool waters. If you like to ride horses this is also an excellent ride and with over 1 million acres Carson National Forest offers endless miles of recreation. Both El Vado Lake and Huron Lake are within an hour’s drive as well.

Ranches for sale in the Cebolla, New Mexico area including hunting ranches and horse ranches

Mesa de las Viejas is named after true events. A group of settlers were bound west in a wagon train to find land to settle. A blizzard hit and the wagons were stuck in deep snow. It was decided the men would strike out to find food and a possible route out but never came back. The women survived the ordeal and the area was forever known as Mesa d las Viejas which translates to table of old women.

The area is also known as a hideout of the Hart Brothers who were notorious outlaws who robbed a train in the Durango Colorado area and made their escape to their hideout along the Rio Chama. A posse pursued the outlaws and killed the outlaws but the gold was never found. To this day the trail down to the Rio Chama is called the Hart Trail.
